During the Medicean age, Lorenzo the Magnificent sent Michelangelo to Pietrasanta to find the best statuary marble for the monuments and buildings of Florence. This began a tradition of artistic excellence that continues to this day.

Today, Pietrasanta is known as the international capital of artistic craftsmanship. Over 40 marble studios and foundries call the town home, as well as numerous workshops and galleries. Pietrasanta is also a popular destination for artists in residence, and it hosts a number of art festivals and events throughout the year.
